About George N. Wallace

George and Nancy Wallace have owned and operated a farm/ranch—Soldias Farm—north of Fort Collins, Colo., for 48 years with additional farm ground in Phillips County, Colo.

They raise organic crops like raise corn, and pinto beans, as well as alfalfa, mixed hay, and livestock. They have received both state and county environmental stewardship awards for their conservation and restoration practices on the farms.

George has served on and chaired a variety of boards and commissions related to planning, agriculture and natural resources. He served nine years as a planning commissioner for Larimer County, Colo., is in his 20th year on the Larimer County Agricultural Advisory Board.

George is also an emeritus professor in Colorado State University’s College of Natural Resources. His teaching, research and service focused on park and protected area planning and management, private land conservation, land use planning and the human dimensions of natural resource management.

In 1996, he founded and became director of the Center for Protected Area Management (CPAM) until his retirement in 2012. The center continues to provide technical assistance, training and research in the U.S. and Latin American protected areas in partnership with entities such as UNESCO, IUCN, USAID, USDA Forest Service International Programs, the National Park Service, Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and others.

He was a U.S. member of  IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the recipient of the Packard International Parks Merit Award, the Chief of the Forest Service’s Rural Community Development award, the Enos Mills Lifetime Achievement Award and the Troxell Award for Distinguished Service to Students. He is the author of 38 peer-reviewed publications, 39 technical reports, and invited articles, and has given more than 50 invited presentations at conferences.

He is a father grandfather, citizen, outdoorsman, horse packer, hunter and fisherman, former Marine, Peace Corps Volunteer. He periodically enjoys writing an occasional essay or poem when time allows and the spirit moves him. Nancy, a main source of George’s contentment, is an attorney who still practices part of the week as well as being a farm wife, master gardener, and serving on the Larimer County Planning Commission and Open Lands Advisory Board.
